Photovoice 2022: Brave Spaces

April at ACT means one thing: PHOTOVOICE! Our annual Youth Photovoice Contest challenges local youth to promote healthy choices, reimagine public spaces, and celebrate community.

This year, we are excited to partner with Queer Connect Bennington to uplift the experiences of local LGBTQIA+ youth and allies. This year’s theme is Brave Spaces!

All youth deserve access to spaces—like homes, schools, and community events—that positively affirm who they are. Where do you feel safe and celebrated? Take a photo of a physical or virtual space, supportive people, or something else… be creative!

Youth ages 12-18 from Bennington County, Berkshire County, and Rensselaer County are invited to participate.

Submitting is simple: send us your shots using this form. The deadline to submit is May 8th!

You can win a prize pack that includes gift certificates to some of your favorite local spots! Winners will be announced on June 1st (the start of Pride Month), and their photos will be on display in Queer Connect’s local art show in North Bennington during the month of June.

Not sure how to get started? Here are some questions to consider:

  • What are examples of safe, supportive, and substance-free activities for LGBTQ youth and allies in your community to feel empowered to live their truths?
  • We all have a favorite place or safe spot that makes us feel free to be ourselves or helps us feel brave to explore who we are. What’s yours?
  • Is there someone—a friend, teacher, or other caring adult—that makes you feel seen for who you are? Take a picture of them in a way that uplifts this relationship!
