ACT Bennington announced the winners of the 2026 Youth Appreciation Awards, which recognize local youth for their leadership and efforts to make the community a healthier and kinder place.
Educators and youth-serving professionals were encouraged to nominate young people who demonstrate leadership by offering help to those in need, making a difference through service and activism, and showing determination and resilience in overcoming life challenges. The annual awards are part of Youth Appreciation Month, a statewide celebration during the month of May that recognizes young people for all that they contribute to our communities.
Three students received Youth Appreciation Awards:
Ella D., an eighth grader at Mt. Anthony Union Middle School (MAUMS), was selected as the recipient of the middle school award. Recognized for her outstanding character and positive influence, Ella was described by her nominator as an “excellent human” who consistently demonstrates kindness, compassion, and encouragement toward others, and creates a welcoming and supportive environment for her peers and school community. Through her warmth, empathy, and commitment to lifting up those around her, Ella demonstrates the qualities of effective and impactful leadership.
Peyton W., a ninth grader at Mt. Anthony Union High School (MAUHS), received the underclassmen award. Through their involvement with the DREAM program, Peyton consistently demonstrates a dedication to supporting mentors, staff, peers, and younger youth. Their care for younger community members and willingness to serve others reflect a strong sense of empathy, responsibility, and civic engagement. Peyton has made a meaningful impact on the community through their generosity and positivity.
McKinley K., twelfth grader at MAUHS, received the senior award. McKinley is recognized for his outstanding leadership, academic achievement, and commitment to community service. A two-time Vermont American Legion Oratorical Contest champion and national scholarship recipient, McKinley has distinguished himself through his dedication to civic engagement, scholarly excellence, and volunteerism, including work with the Vermont Veterans’ Home, Bennington Museum, and local community organizations.
“I am continually inspired by the young people in our midst and this year’s nominees are no exception. Reviewing these nominations reminded me why I remain committed to service: because I can see that same commitment reflected in the next generation,” says Jackie Matts, Town of Bennington Select Board member, who served as a judge for the 2026 Youth Appreciation Awards. “These students are not waiting to make a difference; they are already doing it, and that deserves to be celebrated.”
Tracy Adams of Heritage Family Credit Union, who also served as a judge this year, continues, “Reviewing each of the finalists was a reminder that despite the unending stream of negative news the next generation is making sure there is good happening everyday in big and little ways. We are fortunate to have such empathetic youth to become our future leaders.”
