New Vaping Trends & Supporting Healthy Youth

As if figuring out brat summer wasn’t enough, there’s another emerging trend to keep an eye on—“smart” vapes complete with touch screens and apps. With features that let users play games, compete for “puff counts,” and more, these vapes are appealing directly to the digital generation.

Remember: it’s not a young person’s fault for getting sucked in. Big Tobacco uses celebrity branding, brightly colored products designed to look like toys, and now gaming devices, specifically to addict young people.

As we head into the new school year, it’s important for all of us—caregivers, teachers, and community members—to stay informed and give young people the support they need to make healthy choices:

  • Educate, Don’t Shame: Talk openly with youth about the risks of vaping without making them feel guilty or ashamed. Knowledge is a powerful tool for harm reduction.
  • Encourage Help-Seeking: Youth who vape may have a hard time asking for support out of fear of getting in trouble. Let teens know it’s okay to ask for help when they’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling with anything, from stress to peer pressure. Creating a supportive environment where they can talk openly is key to helping them navigate these challenges.
  • Provide Resources: Refer teens who may be struggling with nicotine dependence to My Life My Quit or This is Quitting. Display or share resources like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for youth who may be struggling with stress or suicidal thoughts.
  • Promote Healthy Coping Skills: Among Vermont high school students who vaped during the past month, 30% used because they were feeling anxious or stressed. Equip teens with effective ways to manage stress and anxiety, like mindfulness, movement, and creative outlets.
