Winter Self-Care: Checking In With Your Mental Health

Winter and the holidays can be a hard time for some of us. Between school stress, family expectations, money worries, loneliness, or changes in routine, it is normal to feel overwhelmed, even when everyone else seems excited or “happy.” Shorter days and colder weather can also affect our mood and energy.

If winter break feels more heavy than relaxing, you are not alone. You deserve support, understanding, and someone who will listen without judgment. If you’re struggling or just need to talk, confidential help is always available:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline – Call or text 988 to talk to someone right away if you’re feeling overwhelmed, hopeless, or unsafe. Free, confidential, and available 24/7.
  • Crisis Text Line – Text HOME to 741741 to message with a trained crisis counselor when you need support but don’t want to talk on the phone.
  • The Trevor Project – Mental health support specifically for LGBTQ+ youth. Call, text, or chat confidentially.
  • RAINN – Help for anyone affected by sexual violence. Confidential support, information, and someone to listen whenever you need it.
  • VT Helplink – They can help connect you to substance use resources and services near you.
  • Vermont 211 – A free service that helps you find local support for food, housing, mental health care, and more.
  • National Domestic Violence Hotline – Support for teens and families experiencing abuse at home. You can call, text, or chat safely and confidentially.

  • United Counseling Service (UCS) – Call 802-442-5491 for immediate mental health support in Bennington County. Available 24/7 if you or someone you know is in crisis and needs help right away.
  • PAVE – Call the Crisis Hotline 802-442-2111 for 24/7 support and assistance to victims of violence. Note: child abuse will be reported to child protective services.
  • Bennington County Food Resources – Free prepared foods, food pantries and distribution locations, and meals to go in Bennington County.
