ACT Awards Gloria Sheelah Cruzado 2026 Advocate of the Year

ACT Bennington has recognized Gloria Sheelah Cruzado as 2026 Advocate of the Year, honoring her dedication to supporting healthy youth and families.

Cruzado is a longtime supporter of ACT’s Take Care Project, participating in monthly period “packing parties,” where volunteers assemble over 200 menstrual care packages that help ensure access to essential supplies in Bennington and beyond. Cruzado brings her son Zamir with her to ACT’s packing parties, modeling the importance of community service from a young age.

“Time and again, Gloria shows up with heart and dedication to our community,” says ACT director Dare Chammings. “Her work brings ACT’s values of care, equity, and collaboration to life, and we are thrilled to present her with this award”

Cruzado is the owner of Sheelah’s Mobile Braiding, specializing in natural hair care. “My work is about meeting people where they are and bringing culturally competent haircare into spaces where it hasn’t always existed. When people feel seen and cared for, that boost of confidence follows,” Cruzado says.

Last spring, Cruzado partnered with ACT Bennington and the Rutland Area NAACP to organize a free hair clinic and fashion show for BIPOC youth in the Bennington area. She managed all logistics while creating an affirming space where young people could access professional hair care while feeling celebrated.

This event is just one example of Cruzado’s commitment to service and leadership in the region. Cruzado also serves as a resident braider at The Root Social Justice Center’s BIPOC Hair Shop in Brattleboro, organizes annual holiday gift drives, and collaborates with the Rutland Area NAACP. She was named a 2025 Emerging Leader by both Southern Vermont Young Professionals and The Shires Young Professionals.
