Fact Friday: Snowshoes are 6,000 years old.

Fact: Snowshoes have been around for almost 6,000 years.

They were first invented in central Asia as a means moving through heavy snow quickly to help hunt for food. The earliest designs were modeled after the paw of the Snowshoe hare seen below.

Recreational Snowshoeing, on the other hand, has only been around since the late 19th century. It’s grown into quite the sport, and this week the U.S. National Snowshoe Championships are coming to Woodford, VT. (Pretty neat, huh.)
